A Reuters/Ipsos poll has found that only about one in four Americans believe that President Donald Trump’s conflict with Iran was worth the cost. Roughly half of the respondents in the survey said they believe the conflict was not worth the costs involved.
The poll results also show that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 34 percent. This figure represents the lowest level recorded during his current presidency.
On the question of the United States position, only 23 percent of Americans think the country is now in a stronger position toward Iran. Thirty-five percent of Americans said they believe the position has become weaker as a result of the conflict.
The survey further indicates that 63 percent of Americans do not expect the current US-Iran agreement to produce durable peace. A majority of those surveyed doubt that the ceasefire will lead to lasting peace between the two nations.
The poll was conducted after US and Iranian negotiators reached a preliminary understanding in Switzerland. This ceasefire framework includes measures related to maritime security and de-escalation.
Regional actors participated in the diplomatic efforts. Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar were involved in the recent diplomacy. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi consulted regional leaders as part of these efforts.
