Rosatom Head Reports One Killed in Attack on Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Plant
Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, stated that an attack targeted the physical protection section of Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant around 7:20, killing one employee.
He said the main wave of evacuation for Russian experts at the facility began about 20 minutes after the strike.
Likhachev attributed the attacks on the Bushehr plant to the United States and Israel. He expressed uncertainty about whether the incident was intentional or accidental.
The situation at the plant is approaching a worst-case scenario, Likhachev warned, potentially leading to a regional catastrophe. This echoes prior cautions from the International Atomic Energy Agency that attacks on Bushehr could trigger a radioactive incident affecting broad areas of Iran and surrounding regions.
Bushehr is Iran's only active nuclear power plant. Its first unit was connected to the grid in 2011 with Russian participation, while plans for a second phase have been halted amid conflicts.
