Russia to Continue Support for UN Drug Prevention Efforts in Afghanistan and Central Asia
Russia's Foreign Ministry stated that the country supports the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) efforts in the region, including Afghanistan, to prevent drug use among youth and intends to continue this cooperation.
According to a statement reported by TASS, Deputy Foreign Minister Dmitry Lyubinsky participated in a side event at the 60th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. The event focused on experiences in working with youth in the digital space in Central Asian countries to prevent drug consumption. It was organized by UNODC's Regional Office for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran, and Pakistan, with support from Russia, Central Asian countries, and the office's specialized section.
The ministry highlighted appreciation for UNODC's activities in preventing drug use among youth, particularly in Afghanistan and Central Asia. Emphasis was placed on preventing addiction and promoting healthy lifestyles, which Moscow considers a priority.
Russia has been a major donor to UNODC youth initiatives since 2012 and supported the creation of a regional youth network in Central Asia. Since 2021, it has provided regular financial assistance for the network's development.
These topics were also discussed in a separate meeting between Lyubinsky and Oliver Stolpe, UNODC's regional representative.
