KABUL — Sergei Vakunov, Russia's ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, stated that the Russian air base in Kant has the current capacity and facilities to counter security threats from the southern flank, particularly those linked to Afghanistan, and requires no expansion.

According to a report by the 24.kg news website on Friday, Vakunov said the base's operational parameters are sufficient to repel security threats against Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member countries from the south.

He added that Russian forces stationed in Kyrgyzstan are effectively carrying out their duties, cooperating with Kyrgyz security institutions to combat extremism, terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime.

Vakunov emphasized that Moscow will continue equipping the base with the most advanced weapons and modern military equipment.

The ambassador recalled that the Russian air bases in Kant and Karakol were established at the request of Kyrgyzstan's leadership during difficult periods following international terrorist attacks originating from Afghan territory.

Over the past two decades, the Kant base has played a significant role in ensuring Kyrgyzstan's security and providing air support for CSTO rapid reaction forces in the region.
