Russian air defense systems engaged a swarm of drones targeting the Moscow region overnight. The country's Defense Ministry announced that 42 of the drones were shot down before they could reach their intended targets.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin provided additional details on the response. He stated that air defense units intercepted multiple drones approaching the capital city. Emergency services were immediately sent to several locations to deal with debris from the downed drones.
Nevertheless, the interception was not complete. Several drones succeeded in reaching a major oil refinery located in the Moscow area. Authorities have begun the process of assessing the damage sustained by the facility as a result of the impacts.
The attack comes amid continued drone exchanges in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Both sides have increasingly focused on striking energy and logistical infrastructure located far from the main battle areas.
The incident highlights the reach of long-range drone operations in the ongoing hostilities. Officials continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
