The incident unfolded in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv on Saturday when a gunman began shooting at pedestrians, resulting in multiple casualties. The attacker then proceeded to a supermarket in the area, where he took several individuals hostage. One of those hostages was killed during the event. Police responded to the scene and after a period of negotiations that lasted approximately 40 minutes, they entered the supermarket and fatally shot the gunman.

President Volodymyr Zelensky provided details on the casualties in a statement. He reported that four people had died on the street as a result of the initial shooting. Additionally, one person who had been taken hostage was killed, and one woman succumbed to her injuries later while in the hospital. This brought the total number of deaths to six, with 14 people sustaining injuries.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko also commented on the incident. The minister disclosed that the gunman had been in legal possession of the firearm used in the attack. The weapon was registered, and the perpetrator had a medical permit. Klymenko explained that efforts were made to resolve the situation peacefully through negotiations, but these talks ultimately did not succeed, leading to the police intervention.

Following the resolution of the hostage situation, Ukraine’s Security Service classified the shooting as a possible act of terrorism. As of now, the motive for the deadly attack has not been determined. Investigations are continuing in order to shed light on why the gunman carried out the shooting.
