Six killed in mid-air helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro

The collision occurred on Sunday morning in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes district, with the helicopters plummeting into an electric vehicle dealership parking lot and setting about twenty cars on fire. The mid-air collision between two helicopters occurred over the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It happened during the morning hours of Sunday in the district known as Recreio dos Bandeirantes, which is located in the western part of the urban area.

After the collision, the two helicopters fell from the sky and landed in a parking lot. This parking lot belonged to a dealership that sells electric vehicles. The crash and subsequent fire led to the ignition of about twenty cars that were parked in the area.

The human cost of the accident was six deaths. These fatalities included the five people who were traveling in one of the helicopters and the pilot who was alone in the second helicopter. No survivors were reported from either aircraft.

Dealing with the fire proved difficult for the responding teams. The presence of lithium-ion batteries in the electric cars produced toxic gases that made the flames harder to put out. Fire services spokesman Fabio Contreiras provided comments on this aspect of the emergency response.

Brazilian authorities began an investigation to find out why the helicopters collided. Records maintained by the national center for investigating aviation accidents show that this was the eighty-fifth such accident to occur in Brazil during the year two thousand twenty-six.
