A snow leopard attacked livestock in Khandud village, the central area of Wakhan district in Badakhshan province, killing nine animals and injuring seven others overnight.
Maulvi Wajihuddin "Mazhari," the district governor of Wakhan, confirmed the incident occurred the previous night, adding that the animal fled the scene after the attack.
Mir Ali, a resident of Khandud village and the affected herder, reported significant losses from the attack. He called on relevant officials and institutions for serious attention, compensation and preventive measures, noting the rarity of snow leopards in the area.
Snow leopards are rare and protected animals primarily inhabiting high mountainous regions. Environmental experts attribute such incidents to dwindling natural prey and expanding human settlements drawing the predators closer to villages.
