Supreme Council of Environmental Volunteers Inaugurated in Kabul
The General Directorate of Environmental Protection under the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has inaugurated the Supreme Council of Environmental Volunteers in Kabul. The initiative aims to promote environmental conservation and address climate change through coordinated efforts involving both public institutions and civil society.
Mawlawi Mati ul-Haq Khalis, head of the General Directorate of Environmental Protection, addressed the inauguration ceremony. He noted that Afghanistan’s natural environment has faced substantial degradation over the past fifty years, citing prolonged conflict, instability, and shifting climate patterns as primary drivers of the damage. Khalis emphasized that the newly formed council will serve as a platform to mobilize community resources and institutional support for ecological preservation.
The council brings together a diverse group of participants, including representatives from various government institutions, religious scholars, community elders, youth groups, environmental specialists, and dedicated volunteers. During the inauguration, attending officials and civil society representatives formally pledged their cooperation to advance the council’s conservation goals.
The directorate announced that a formal leadership board for the council will be appointed shortly. Initial operations will commence in Kabul, with a structured plan to expand the network’s reach to provincial and district levels nationwide. The establishment of this volunteer framework is intended to foster long-term public engagement in ecological preservation and climate adaptation efforts.
