Taiwan Defense Minister: US Forms Special Team to Speed Up Weapons Deliveries

Taiwanese officials say the United States is prioritizing the island's defense by accelerating delayed weapons deliveries amid growing military pressure from China.

Taiwan Defense Minister Wellington Koo said Washington has established a special team to expedite weapons programs. Deliveries of F-16V fighter jets, ordered in 2019, are expected to begin this year, according to Taiwanese officials. This marks a key step in bolstering Taiwan's air defenses.

Taiwan has repeatedly voiced concerns over delays in receiving U.S.-purchased military equipment as Chinese military activities around the island intensify. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has ramped up drills and pressure in recent years, heightening fears of potential conflict.

The United States does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent country but serves as its primary international supporter and main arms supplier. U.S. arms sales to Taiwan have long strained relations between Washington and Beijing, with China opposing such military aid.

Faster delivery of these weapons could enhance Taiwan's defense readiness and deterrence capabilities as regional tensions persist.
