Taliban Require Kabul University Students to Sign Pledge Adhering to Hanafi Madhhab
KABUL — Sources say Taliban authorities have required students at Kabul University to sign a commitment letter pledging adherence to the Hanafi madhhab along with various Islamic behaviors and disciplinary rules.
A copy of the document obtained by Amu TV includes clause 6, which explicitly states commitment to Imam Abu Hanifa's madhhab to preserve the unity of the ummah. The pledge commits signatories to wearing Sharia-compliant clothing, performing congregational prayers, avoiding music and compliance with the Taliban's Amr bil Ma'ruf and Nahi anil Munkar rules.
Sources described the signing as forcible, noting protests from some students that were suppressed by university administration. The letter warns that violators have no right to complain about consequences and includes additional clauses on maintaining discipline, ensuring attendance and prohibiting weapons on campus.
Taliban officials have not responded to questions from Amu TV.
