Tarique Rahman Sworn In as Bangladesh's New Prime Minister After Election Victory
Bangladesh swore in Tarique Rahman as its new prime minister following his party's landslide victory in recent elections, marking a significant political shift after years of unrest.
Rahman took office during a ceremony in Dhaka on Tuesday. His Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured approximately two-thirds of parliamentary seats in the February election, providing a strong mandate for governance.
The election followed a 2024 uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leading to an interim administration under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus that oversaw the transition to polls.
Returning after 17 years in exile, Rahman pledged to restore order, revive economic confidence and prevent further unrest. Reuters reported that he now faces challenges in restoring investor trust amid ongoing economic and political tensions.
Rahman's 49-member cabinet includes senior party figures and new appointees focused on economic reforms and stabilizing key sectors, including the garment industry.
Opposition groups, including Islamist and youth-led parties, boycotted the swearing-in ceremony, highlighting persistent political divisions despite the election results.
