U.S. President Donald Trump has called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a very difficult guy in his latest comments on international affairs. The remarks were made after the United States reached a preliminary framework agreement with Iran. According to Trump, Israel has every reason to feel grateful for this agreement because it seeks to bring an end to the regional conflict. It also provides for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and sets the stage for further negotiations on Iran's nuclear program and the relief of sanctions. Plans call for the memorandum to be signed in Switzerland in the near future.
In his statements, Trump mentioned that he had a conversation with Netanyahu prior to the public announcement of the framework. He made it clear that Israel did not take part directly in the negotiations between the United States and Iran. The nuclear issue is expected to receive significant attention during the 60-day ceasefire period that is part of the process.
Trump also took the opportunity to criticize recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon. He said these actions came close to complicating the agreement. The president issued a warning that military action against Iran could resume if the further negotiations do not succeed. He noted that the use of military pressure in the preceding period had been useful in getting both sides to engage in discussions.
This agreement follows an extended period of months of regional conflict, which has had impacts on Lebanon and other parts of the area. One immediate effect of reopening the Strait of Hormuz has been a sharp decline in oil prices on the global market.
