US President Donald Trump announced that Vice President JD Vance will not be leading the delegation of the United States for the upcoming negotiations with Iran that are planned to take place in Islamabad. Trump specifically pointed to security concerns as the reason why the vice president would be skipping the talks.

The US president shared his thoughts on the matter with ABC News. In the interview, he made it clear that the decision was made for one reason only. “It’s only because of security,” Trump told the network. At the same time, he had positive words for Vance, saying “JD’s great.”

This new position from the president comes after other officials in the US administration had suggested a different arrangement for the talks. Both Mike Waltz, serving as the United States envoy to the United Nations, and Chris Wright, the Secretary of Energy for the United States, had indicated that it would be JD Vance who would be leading the American side in the negotiations set for Islamabad, beginning on Monday.

In a separate statement made on Sunday, President Trump revealed that the United States had sent a delegation to Islamabad with the aim of conducting discussions with Iran.

The Iranian side has taken a firm stance on the matter. Iran will not be sending a negotiating team to the Pakistani capital for as long as the current naval blockade remains in place.

Ahead of the talks, tight security measures have been put into effect in Islamabad.
