U.S. President Donald Trump expressed disappointment that European NATO allies did not provide political backing during the recent confrontation between the United States and Iran. Speaking publicly, he noted that the United States did not need military help from its partners in the alliance. However, he said expressions of political support would have been welcome during the period of heightened tensions.

Trump made these remarks in the company of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during an event at the White House on Wednesday. The timing of the comments coincides with continued diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving issues between the U.S. and Iran.

Mediation in the talks is being handled by Qatar and Pakistan, while supporting discussions have occurred in Switzerland and Oman. The agenda includes Iran's nuclear activities, matters of regional security, and the maintenance of free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Many European governments have promoted the use of diplomacy with Iran as a means to prevent the spread of conflict throughout the Middle East. At the same time, variations in approach exist between Washington and European nations concerning Iran policy as well as the situations in Gaza and Lebanon.

Trump also took the opportunity to renew calls for increased defense spending by NATO member states. These calls precede a major NATO summit where topics will include defense spending commitments, the war in Ukraine, threats posed by Russia, and instability affecting the Middle East.
