Turkey Works to Restart Russia-Ukraine Negotiations Amid Diplomatic Push
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Türkiye is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to restart negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The initiative includes preparations for a potential summit between the leaders of the two nations, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict.
The diplomatic push follows a formal request from Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who asked Türkiye to host a meeting between Ukrainian and Russian leadership. Ankara has positioned itself as a key mediator in the conflict, having previously facilitated grain export deals and prisoner exchanges.
In response to the mediation efforts, the Kremlin has outlined specific conditions for any direct engagement. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to dialogue, but emphasized that any direct meeting would only take place if the primary objective is to finalize agreements related to the conflict. This indicates Moscow’s preference for talks focused on concrete resolutions rather than preliminary discussions.
The announcement comes amid broader international diplomatic activity surrounding the war in Ukraine. Turkish officials have maintained regular communication channels with both Kyiv and Moscow, seeking to bridge the gap between their respective positions. While Ukraine continues to push for high-level diplomatic engagement to secure security guarantees and territorial resolutions, Russia has consistently tied future negotiations to the implementation of previously discussed frameworks.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, both sides have signaled a willingness to engage under specific parameters. The proposed Turkish-mediated summit remains under discussion, with final arrangements dependent on the alignment of diplomatic conditions set by Kyiv and Moscow.
