Turkish police conducted operations in the cities of Şırnak and Bayburt that resulted in the detention of fifteen Afghan refugees who lacked legal documents. In addition to the refugees, authorities arrested six suspects connected to human trafficking activities. Some of the suspects have been imprisoned as a result of these actions.
The operations reflect Turkey's ongoing efforts to address undocumented migration. Refugees detained during the raids were transferred to deportation centers in the relevant cities. From there, they are expected to be removed from the country in accordance with Turkish law.
In the Şırnak operation, eight individuals without residence permits were taken into custody. Seven of them were Afghan citizens while the remaining one was an Iraqi national. Three human trafficking suspects were also arrested in connection with this incident.
Separately, in Bayburt, eight Afghan refugees who had entered the city illegally were detained by police. Three suspects involved in human trafficking were apprehended during this operation, and a court ordered one of them to be imprisoned.
Turkey has stepped up its operations against undocumented Afghans over the past several months. According to reports from the United Nations refugee agency, more than thirteen thousand five hundred Afghan refugees have been detained and deported since the start of the year. The Turkish Migration Administration has stated that illegal migration is not permitted and that the focus remains on border security along with arrests and deportations.
