Turkish Police Detain 57 Afghan Migrants Hidden in Truck Tanker in Rize
Turkish police in the northern city of Rize detained 57 Afghan migrants found hidden inside the tank section of a cargo truck on Saturday. The truck driver was arrested on suspicion of human smuggling.
After completing necessary procedures, the migrants were transferred to foreigners’ removal centers.
The incident highlights Turkey's ongoing crackdowns on irregular migration. Afghans represent the largest group of detained undocumented migrants in the country.
More than 42,000 Afghan migrants were detained in Turkey in 2025, amid continued outflows from Afghanistan due to insecurity, economic hardship, and political repression.
