A vehicle drove into pedestrians in the German city of Leipzig on Monday, leaving two people dead and 22 others injured. The incident occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. local time in the vicinity of Grimmaische Straße and Augustusplatz.

Police spokesperson Susanne Luebcke stated that the driver fled the immediate area but was subsequently located and taken into custody. Investigators have identified the suspect as a 33-year-old German citizen with a known history of mental health issues. Authorities have not released a motive, and the investigation remains active.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung and Saxony state head Michael Kretschmer confirmed the casualty figures and expressed condolences to the affected families. The two deceased victims were identified as a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both German citizens. Emergency responders transported the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The Leipzig public prosecutor’s office has launched a formal inquiry into the incident. Police secured the surrounding streets while forensic specialists collected evidence from the scene.
