Two New Obstetrics Operating Rooms Completed at Kunduz Regional Hospital
Two newly constructed obstetrics and gynecology operating rooms have been completed and officially handed over for use at the Kunduz Regional Hospital. The facilities, built to meet international standards, are intended to strengthen maternal and infant healthcare services across northeastern Afghanistan.
Dr. Mohammadullah Hekmat, head of the Kunduz Provincial Public Health Directorate, confirmed the completion of the project. He noted that the operating rooms are equipped with modern medical infrastructure designed to improve clinical outcomes and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the region. The construction and outfitting of the facilities were carried out by Doctors Without Borders.
During the handover, a delegation from the medical organization toured other departments within the hospital. Representatives visited the orthopedic ward and committed to supplying additional advanced medical equipment to support ongoing treatment efforts. The provincial health directorate emphasized that the upgraded surgical spaces will allow medical staff to perform complex procedures more safely and efficiently.
The Kunduz Regional Hospital serves as a primary referral center for several provinces in the northeast. Health officials have stated that expanding specialized surgical capacity is a priority to address longstanding gaps in reproductive and emergency care. The newly operational rooms will immediately begin receiving patients, with hospital administrators coordinating with the provincial health directorate to integrate the facilities into existing service schedules.
