UN Deputy Special Representative Expresses Solidarity with Afghan Journalists on World Radio Day

Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan and current acting head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), expressed solidarity with Afghan journalists on World Radio Day. She visited studios of local radios Radio Mursal and Radio Kelid in Kabul on Friday, February 13, 2026, and stated that radio continues to play an unparalleled role in informing Afghans.

Gagnon highlighted that radio has informed, educated, and connected people across Afghanistan's diverse languages and generations for over a century. She noted that radio remains the primary source of information for millions of Afghans, particularly in rural communities. Gagnon commended the commitment of Afghan radio staff, who continue their work despite facing challenges.

World Radio Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 at UNESCO's suggestion, marks February 13 to honor radio workers' efforts in information dissemination. UNESCO designated this year's theme as "Radio and Artificial Intelligence," stating that ethical and responsible use of AI in broadcasting could enhance audience trust.

The source also noted that the Taliban has imposed broad restrictions on radios and other media outlets in Afghanistan. It has closed several local radios in various provinces for airing music, entertainment, and educational programs. Due to a ban on images of living beings, television media activities have halted in 24 provinces, leaving many people reliant on radio broadcasts for information.
