UN Experts Warn War in Iran Has Worsened Situation for Afghan Migrants

UN human rights experts have warned that the war in Iran has seriously worsened the situation of millions of Afghan migrants, leaving them more vulnerable to a broader humanitarian crisis.

The experts welcomed a recent agreement between Iran and the United States but stated that the fourteen-point deal focuses primarily on geopolitical issues such as military withdrawal, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, nuclear commitments, sanctions reduction, and a three hundred billion dollar reconstruction fund.

They criticized the agreement for overlooking human rights violations including executions, repression, and displacement.

The war has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths from airstrikes on residential areas, educational centers, hospitals, and religious sites, and has displaced millions of people.

At least one hundred fifty-six people have been executed in Iran since the start of the war, including forty-two on security and espionage charges often based on forced confessions without legal access.

Iran has seen intensified internal repression with thousands arrested, reports of torture, enforced disappearances, show executions, and asset confiscations affecting over one thousand five hundred citizens. Minority groups including Baha'is, Kurds, and Baluchis have been severely impacted.

The country has also faced a sharp rise in unemployment, food inflation up to one hundred fifteen percent, wage payment delays, and a nearly three-month internet shutdown disrupting economic and social life.
