UN-Habitat Calls for Urgent Climate Action in Afghan Cities

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has warned that Afghan cities are on the front lines of the climate crisis, citing annual temperature increases in the country. The organization stated that this situation underscores the urgent need for climate action in urban areas.

On Tuesday, 28 Dalwa, UN-Habitat reiterated on its X platform concerns over the vulnerability of Afghan cities to climate change. It predicted that by 2060, one in every two people in Afghanistan will live in cities, while many urban centers lack preparedness for this rapid urbanization.

UN-Habitat emphasized that priority must be given to creating suitable and safe living environments. Previously, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) warned that climate change has led to increased heatwaves in South and Central Asia, particularly in Afghanistan.

The organization highlighted broader global implications, noting that global warming threatens half the world's population with crisis. A recent report from the Climate Change Research Institute warned of unprecedented temperature rises this year and their concerning consequences.
