The United Nations Security Council unanimously extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, for one year with all 15 members voting in favor.
The resolution directs UNAMA to coordinate humanitarian aid, facilitate dialogue between Afghan officials and the international community, and report on human rights, political and security developments, and inclusive governance.
China's representative Fu Cong said the resolution reflects global expectations for Afghanistan's return to the international community and that UNAMA should serve as a bridge for dialogue.
Russia's representative Anna Evstigneeva called for a strategic assessment of UNAMA based on realistic analysis conducted in cooperation with Afghan authorities.
Denmark's representative Christina Markus expressed concern over restrictions on women's rights and stated that no sustainable solution exists without a credible political path.
The United States representative Jennifer Lauth urged the appointment of a UN special envoy under Resolution 2721 to lead the Doha process.
Council members also urged cooperation with Afghan authorities for a strategic review. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has not yet commented on the mandate extension.
