US and Iranian delegations have arrived in Switzerland to begin direct negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, sanctions relief and efforts to reduce regional violence, including in Lebanon.

The Iranian delegation is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. US Vice President JD Vance is attending alongside US representative Steve Witkoff, with officials from Pakistan including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir also participating.

The meetings at the Bürgenstock resort aim to expand a recently signed memorandum that includes a 60-day ceasefire into a broader agreement covering nuclear issues and regional security. The talks follow earlier delays linked to tensions in the region.

US officials rejected Iranian claims that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, stating that commercial shipping continues and that 55 vessels carrying more than 17 million barrels of oil passed through the waterway on Saturday.

The negotiations take place amid ongoing clashes in Lebanon, where Israeli strikes killed at least 47 people on Saturday, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Reliability assessment

Four independent Afghan outlets (Amu TV, Hurriyat, Khaama Press, Pajhwok) corroborate the core event of delegations arriving in Switzerland for US-Iran talks with consistent details on key participants and agenda; on-record attributions from named officials (JD Vance, Iranian spokespeople, CENTCOM) provide concrete sourcing

The source language mixes facts with framing or advocacy wording. Khaama Press: "already falling apart" – this quoted phrase from a US congressman introduces negative opinion language framing the agreement as failing; "diplomatic breakthrough" presents the memorandum's signing as a major positive achievement with implied advocacy for the process.
