U.S. Central Command reports seventh service member death in conflict with Iran
The U.S. Central Command announced that a seventh American service member has died from injuries sustained during Iran's counter-attack on March 1 targeting U.S. troops stationed in Saudi Arabia. The conflict began more than a week ago following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets on Feb. 28.
The Pentagon stated that the soldier's death follows the killing of six other U.S. troops in an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait, describing it as one of the deadliest incidents for American forces since the escalation.
Iran launched retaliatory strikes against American positions and allied facilities across several Middle Eastern countries. Iranian authorities reported more than 1,300 people killed in Iran from the U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Regional officials noted heavy casualties elsewhere, including nearly 400 people killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon and at least 10 civilians killed in Israel during Iranian attacks.
Amid the conflict, Iran announced the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new supreme leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei. International observers have expressed concerns that the war and leadership transition could deepen the conflict and further destabilize the Middle East.
