US-Iran Diplomatic Talks Stall After Trump Cancels Islamabad Envoy Visit

Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran have stalled following President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a planned visit by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad for bilateral negotiations. The cancellation comes amid a fragile ceasefire that has held since late February, following initial US and Israeli airstrikes.

Iranian officials have maintained a firm stance on the conditions for dialogue. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently concluded a visit to Pakistan, describing the diplomatic engagement as highly productive. In discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran will not participate in negotiations under pressure. Pezeshkian emphasized that Washington must first lift port blockades before formal talks can proceed.

President Trump countered that Iran’s diplomatic proposals remain insufficient and suggested there is internal confusion within Iran’s leadership regarding its negotiating position. The ongoing standoff has significantly impacted regional stability and global energy markets. While a ceasefire remains in place, Iran has largely restricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian oil exports.

Regional tensions have also escalated in neighboring Lebanon, where Israel recently ordered strikes targeting Hezbollah positions. These operations challenge a three-week ceasefire agreement in the area. With both Washington and Tehran exchanging firm preconditions and regional military posturing continuing, prospects for near-term diplomatic resolution appear increasingly uncertain.
