US Deputy Permanent Representative Jennifer Luchta told the UN Security Council that the Doha political process cannot replace the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. She spoke during the council session that considered extending UNAMA's mandate.

The United States voted in favor of the extension. Luchta praised UNAMA staff for carrying out important work on humanitarian assistance, peace efforts and reporting that informs Security Council decisions, despite difficult operating conditions.

Luchta called for a strategic review of the mandate to remove repetitive tasks and improve efficiency. She also urged the UN Secretary-General to appoint a new Special Representative for UNAMA without delay.

Luchta further called on the Taliban to fulfill international commitments on counter-terrorism and human rights. She specifically urged an end to restrictions on women and girls.
