Water and Energy Minister Visits Flood-Damaged Areas Along Amu Darya River in Balkh
The Minister of Water and Energy, Mullah Mohammad Yunus Akhundzada, visited areas along the Amu Darya River in Balkh province that have sustained damage from recent flooding and riverbank erosion. The ministerial tour was conducted to evaluate the extent of the destruction and observe recent deviations in the river’s natural course.
During the visit, Akhundzada traveled to the Shortepay district and Hairatan town to conduct a direct assessment of the affected zones. He reviewed the condition of the riverbanks and examined how shifting water flows have impacted the surrounding landscape. The inspection aimed to gather accurate data on the scale of the environmental damage and to determine the most pressing areas requiring immediate attention.
Following the site assessment, the minister stated that reinforcing the Amu Darya River remains a primary priority for the Ministry of Water and Energy. He emphasized that the government is actively drafting comprehensive and sustainable prevention strategies to address ongoing erosion and flood risks. Akhundzada confirmed that these protective measures will be finalized and implemented in the near future to mitigate further damage and stabilize the riverbanks.
The visit underscores the ministry’s commitment to monitoring waterway conditions and addressing structural vulnerabilities in northern provinces. By focusing on targeted reinforcement efforts, officials intend to establish long-term safeguards for communities situated along the Amu Darya. The upcoming prevention plans are expected to provide a structured approach to managing seasonal water fluctuations and protecting vulnerable areas from future riverbank collapse.
