World Food Programme Reports Regional Crises Complicating Aid Delivery to Afghanistan

The World Food Programme has indicated that delivering humanitarian food aid to Afghanistan has grown into a highly intricate process because of ongoing regional instability, the closure of borders, and the requirement to use extended transportation paths that cover thousands of kilometers.

A notable example involves a consignment of several hundred tons of food supplies sent from Indonesia intended for schoolchildren in Afghanistan. The goods arrived by sea at a port in Pakistan but then had to be redirected. The new route took the shipment through Dubai and then across land through countries located in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. As a result, the journey was lengthened by more than 8,000 kilometers. The cargo had to pass through seven different borders where it encountered delays and underwent inspections. Eventually, the aid reached the capital city of Kabul as well as other provinces in Afghanistan.

The organization also pointed out that hundreds of thousands of people throughout Afghanistan are dealing with acute hunger and poverty. These problems have been made worse by natural disasters, cuts to humanitarian funding, and various restrictions.

In numerous instances, the fortified biscuits that are handed out in schools constitute the only food that many children consume each day. The World Food Programme has stated that aid deliveries to Afghanistan are being maintained even in the face of these challenges.
