The World Health Organization announced its support for 11 addiction treatment centers in Afghanistan. Four of these centers are dedicated to women and children, while one is for adolescent boys. In total, the centers have 610 active beds.
The organization is also backing 11 mobile teams that operate in 10 provinces. These teams provide treatment, mental health, and psychosocial support services to drug-affected individuals.
Four opioid agonist maintenance treatment centers are currently active in the provinces of Kabul, Kandahar, and Helmand. These centers are serving more than 500 people.
According to Edwin Ceniza Salvador of the World Health Organization, substance use disorders are preventable health conditions. The WHO invests in prevention, care access, and health services to help addicts reintegrate into family and society.
The announcement also highlighted the serious health, social, and economic impacts of drug use. The UNODC World Drug Report 2026 warned that the reduction in opium production in Afghanistan and the spread of synthetic opioids is changing the global drug market.
