Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged faster planning and construction of a new energy system to strengthen energy security amid global disruptions.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting on energy development, as reported by state media CCTV on Monday. He emphasized expanding wind and solar power while preserving coal as a core support, alongside the safe development of hydropower and nuclear energy.

In 2025, China added over 430 million kilowatts of new wind and solar capacity, bringing the cumulative installed capacity to 1.84 billion kilowatts. This accounts for 47.3 percent of the country's total installed power capacity, highlighting the balance between green transitions and energy reliability.

Construction has begun on the world's largest hydropower dam on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Separately, work started on Monday on a new solar thermal power plant at an altitude of 4,550 meters in Tibet.

Xi's directive comes as China pushes forward with ambitious renewable energy projects to mitigate risks from international energy shocks, while ensuring a stable power supply through diversified sources.
