Afghan Labor Minister Highlights Worker Hardships, Pledges Support for Domestic Employment
Mullah Abdul Manan Omari, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, addressed the challenges facing Afghan laborers during a May 1 event marking International Workers’ Day. He highlighted the severe hardships and difficult working conditions endured by workers across the country, while outlining government plans to strengthen the domestic labor sector.
During his remarks, Omari stated that foreign entities continue to exploit Afghan workers in a manner that violates fundamental human dignity. He emphasized that addressing these abuses remains a priority for the administration, noting that labor protections must be enforced to safeguard workers’ rights both domestically and abroad.
The minister pledged official backing for the National Workers’ Union, framing the organization as a key partner in advocating for fair labor practices. He also outlined ongoing initiatives aimed at expanding domestic employment opportunities, with the stated goal of reducing reliance on foreign labor markets.
Omari noted that the administration is actively working to reduce foreign dependency by fostering local industries and improving regulatory oversight in the labor sector. He indicated that these measures are intended to provide sustainable livelihoods for Afghan families while preventing the outflow of workers to regions where they face vulnerability.
Omari committed to intensifying efforts within the labor ministry to improve working conditions and streamline job creation programs. He reiterated that sustainable economic development depends on establishing secure, regulated employment pathways that protect Afghan citizens from exploitation and ensure long-term financial stability.
