Afghanistan and Uzbekistan Discuss Expansion of Pharmaceutical Trade and Investment
Senior health officials from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan recently convened to expand bilateral cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector, with discussions focusing on medicine exports, domestic manufacturing capabilities, and regulatory improvements.
Mawlawi Hamdullah Zahid, Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Food and Medicine, hosted a meeting with Jamshid Badalov and a delegation of Uzbek pharmaceutical manufacturers. The talks prioritized the initiation of medicine exports from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan, operating within the framework of a bilateral memorandum of understanding.
Delegates examined Afghanistan’s existing domestic production capacity and identified specific categories of medicines required for import. Representatives from both nations also evaluated potential investment avenues designed to bolster the local healthcare supply chain and ensure consistent access to essential treatments.
Administrative efficiency emerged as a central theme of the negotiations. Officials committed to simplifying the registration procedures for foreign pharmaceutical enterprises seeking to operate in Afghanistan. This regulatory adjustment aims to minimize bureaucratic obstacles, accelerate market entry, and attract sustained foreign capital into the country’s medical sector.
The discussions reflect a broader effort to strengthen economic and health-sector linkages between the two neighboring states. By aligning trade protocols and addressing operational barriers, Afghan and Uzbek representatives signaled a mutual objective to improve pharmaceutical distribution networks and support long-term development in regional healthcare infrastructure.
