Afghanistan Announces Plans for Regional Circular Railway
Afghanistan’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Nooruddin Azizi, has announced official efforts to construct a regional circular railway network designed to integrate Central and South Asian transit corridors. The proposed infrastructure project would establish direct rail links between Afghanistan and five neighboring countries: Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Pakistan.
Azizi stated that the circular rail line is intended to resolve a persistent gap in regional transportation infrastructure. He emphasized that the new network will build upon existing railway connections that currently link four Afghan ports to destinations across Central Asia and Iran. By completing the circular route, officials anticipate improved logistical efficiency and enhanced commercial exchange across the broader region.
The announcement underscores ongoing initiatives to develop Afghanistan’s transit capabilities and leverage its strategic geographic position. While specific timelines, funding frameworks, and technical specifications have not yet been released, the project aligns with stated priorities to modernize national infrastructure and facilitate smoother cross-border trade. Government representatives continue to coordinate with regional partners to advance the planning and implementation phases of the proposed railway system. The minister’s remarks highlight the administration’s commitment to expanding regional connectivity through coordinated infrastructure development.
