Trade between Afghanistan and Iran reached 3.632 billion dollars in the past year, marking a 6.7 percent increase from the previous period. Afghan exports to Iran totaled 72 million dollars during the same timeframe.
Iran's Consul General in Herat, Alireza Marhamati, said Afghanistan maintains the highest level of trade with Iran among its partners. He added that Iran supports the development of Afghan trade, industry and mining.
Officials from both countries noted that trade continued despite conflicts in Iran. They called for expanded cooperation, including greater use of Iranian ports to facilitate Afghan exports and measures to increase Afghan shipments to Iran.
The trade balance remains heavily tilted in Iran's favor. Iranian and Afghan officials stressed the importance of balancing exchanges to benefit both sides. Iran has become Afghanistan's largest trading partner following a reduction in trade with Pakistan.
