Armed Thieves Rob Eight Shops in Herat Wholesale Food Market

An armed robbery took place at a major commercial center in Herat, where thieves targeted multiple shops. They made off with money and various assets from eight different establishments within the Khwaja Mohammad Taqi wholesale food market.

The location of the market is in the Darb Khosh area. This places it approximately one kilometer away from the Taliban security command facility in Herat. The market serves as a key hub for wholesale food distribution across western Afghanistan and is one of the largest of its kind in the region.

Those who carried out the theft appeared to have specific knowledge about the storage of funds by the shopkeepers. Such familiarity suggests that the perpetrators may have had prior information or observation of the daily operations at the shops.

In the wake of the robbery, instructions were issued by the Taliban to the shopkeepers. They were told not to communicate with media outlets regarding the incident. Additionally, they were prohibited from releasing any photographs or videos that might document the event.

The occurrence reflects a reported rise in armed robberies throughout Herat over the past months. In particular, thefts involving vehicles and mobile phones have seen a significant increase. This situation has led several commercial centers to employ private security guards in an effort to safeguard their premises and goods.
