Construction Resumes on Remaining Sections of Torkham-Jalalabad Second-Line Road
The Ministry of Public Works of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has officially resumed construction on the remaining sections of the Torkham-Jalalabad second-line road. The infrastructure project encompasses a 73-kilometer stretch and has been allocated a budget exceeding 848.6 million Afghanis. Authorities have established a 22-month timeline for the full completion of the roadway.
Minister of Public Works Mullah Mohammad Isa Sani has issued directives to engineering teams and contractors, emphasizing the need to accelerate work while adhering to strict quality standards. Ministry reports indicate that construction on the initial 22-kilometer segment is progressing steadily. Field crews are currently executing culvert installations, concrete drainage work, earth excavation, and asphalt paving.
The expansion is intended to significantly increase transit capacity along the eastern transport corridor and reduce chronic traffic congestion on the primary route. Government officials have noted that the project will create sustainable employment opportunities for local residents and improve overall road safety by decreasing vehicle accidents.
The restart of construction follows a previous pause in development on the remaining segments. With funding secured and operational directives in place, the ministry anticipates that the upgraded corridor will streamline domestic and cross-border transit, supporting broader regional connectivity and economic activity. Contractors have been instructed to submit regular progress reports to ensure compliance with the established schedule.
