Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat extends electricity import agreement with Iran for solar year 1405
Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), Afghanistan’s national power utility, has signed an agreement with Iran to continue importing electricity for the solar year 1405 (2026–2027).
The agreement was signed during an official visit to Iran by a high-level DABS delegation led by Chief Executive Officer Alhaj Mullah Abdul Haq Hamkar. The delegation held meetings with Iranian energy officials in Tehran, focusing on extending existing power purchase arrangements and broader cooperation in electricity transmission and infrastructure development.
Discussions addressed technical coordination, capacity expansion and the reliability of cross-border electricity transmission lines between the two countries. The visit took place at the invitation of Tavanir, Iran’s state organization for electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
Afghanistan relies heavily on imported electricity, with supplies from neighbors including Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan meeting much of the national demand. Domestic generation covers only a fraction, especially during winter and peak consumption periods, making import agreements essential for urban centers and industrial zones.
DABS officials stated that sustained engagement with regional electricity-exporting countries has strengthened energy cooperation and improved procurement planning. The extension is expected to enhance energy security, reduce disruptions and provide predictability for the power sector while authorities pursue domestic generation and renewable projects.
