Farmer Killed in Landmine Blast While Ploughing Field in Ghazni Province
A farmer was killed after his tractor struck a buried landmine while he was ploughing agricultural land in the Askarkot area of Qarabagh district, Ghazni province. The incident occurred on Saturday, according to a statement released by the Ghazni provincial police headquarters.
Local authorities confirmed that the victim was operating the vehicle in his field when the explosion took place. Police personnel responded to the scene to secure the area and document the circumstances surrounding the blast. The detonation caused extensive damage to the farming equipment and temporarily disrupted daily agricultural work in the immediate vicinity.
Provincial police officials indicated that the explosion was triggered by an unexploded device that had remained hidden beneath the soil. Remnants of past conflicts continue to pose a persistent threat to civilians and agricultural workers across multiple districts in the region. Authorities have consistently advised residents to exercise heightened caution when working in rural and previously contested zones.
The Saturday explosion follows a similar fatal incident reported just two days earlier in the province’s Waghaz district. In that case, a tractor driver was killed after his vehicle struck an old landmine while navigating a rural route. Police have not yet released details regarding the specific type of explosive involved in either incident, nor have they confirmed whether the two events are connected.
Security officials in Ghazni have urged local communities to report any suspicious objects to the nearest police station rather than attempting to handle them independently. The provincial police headquarters continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant local entities to address the ongoing hazard.
