Herat Factory Shifts to Industrial Parts Production, Employing Dozens of Returnees
A manufacturing facility in Herat province has transitioned to producing approximately 300 types of industrial parts and machinery, marking a notable shift from its previous focus on explosive materials. The operational conversion was supported by a one million dollar investment and currently employs around 70 workers, the majority of whom are Afghan returnees from Iran and Pakistan.
Local industry officials report that the facility sources its raw materials domestically, a strategy designed to reduce reliance on imported components. The Herat Department of Industry and Commerce confirmed that five similar manufacturing plants are currently operational across the province, with their finished goods being distributed to commercial markets nationwide.
Provincial authorities are evaluating policy adjustments to further support the local manufacturing sector. Officials stated that increasing customs tariffs on imported goods is under consideration as a measure to protect domestic producers and encourage local industrial growth.
To accommodate future operational needs, factory management has submitted a formal request for land allocation from provincial authorities. The project underscores broader efforts to repurpose existing industrial sites and integrate returning migrants into the regional workforce. Industry representatives emphasized that expanding domestic manufacturing capacity remains a central priority for economic development in Herat. The initiative aligns with regional economic goals to strengthen local supply chains.
