Aref Arefkia, the renowned Iranian pop singer known as the "Sultan of Hearts," died at the age of 85 on the eve of Nowruz. His daughter, Nazli Arefkia, announced the death in a message on Instagram, expressing the family's deep sorrow.
Over more than six decades of artistic activity, Aref was one of the influential figures in shaping contemporary Iranian pop music. His works were broadcast on radio, television and in films across various decades, gaining recognition among a wide audience. Notable songs include "Sultan of Hearts," "Who is Better Than You," "Stars" and "The Lump in the Sea."
Aref collaborated with various composers and lyricists, playing a key role in linking Western musical styles with Persian songs. Part of his repertoire is registered as enduring works in the collective memory of Persian-speakers.
The song "Sultan of Hearts" was covered by Afghan singer Ahmad Zahir, which popularized it in Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Aref's music has maintained a strong following in Afghanistan across generations, often featured in family gatherings and media. His name is familiar to many listeners there.
Aref Arefkia was born on 19 Asad 1319 in Tehran. He had been struggling with illness for years.
