Kabul Teacher Reports Unpaid Holiday Wages at Private School
A teacher at Shams London Academy in Kabul’s Karte No district has reported that staff members did not receive full salary payments for a recent government-declared holiday period. The educator stated that compensation was withheld for the days spanning the first through sixth of Hamal, despite the school continuing to collect full monthly tuition fees from students.
Shams London Academy operates approximately eight branches across the capital. According to the teacher, the decision to withhold pay for the official holiday contrasts with practices at other private educational institutions in the area, which reportedly compensated their staff in full for the same period.
Educators in the capital frequently navigate varying payroll structures, with some institutions deducting official holiday days from monthly wages while others treat them as paid leave. The current dispute at the academy reflects broader discussions about labor rights and financial stability for teaching staff in the private sector.
Private school operators in Afghanistan are responsible for setting their own employment terms, which often differ from public sector standards. This autonomy allows institutions to manage payroll independently, though it occasionally leads to disputes over holiday compensation.
School management has not yet issued a public statement addressing the wage dispute. The teacher’s claims remain specific to the academy’s internal payroll practices and have not been independently verified by labor authorities or educational regulators.
