Kazakhstan Grain Exports to Afghanistan Rise Sharply in Early 2026
Kazakhstan’s grain exports to Afghanistan increased more than fourfold during the first quarter of 2026, reaching a total of 302,000 tonnes. The sharp rise in shipments highlights a notable expansion in agricultural trade between the Central Asian nation and Afghanistan over the three-month period.
Official data reported by Kazinform indicates that Kazakhstan’s overall grain exports grew by 18 percent in the same timeframe, totaling 3.2 million tonnes. Domestic grain shipments within Kazakhstan also experienced an upward trend, rising by 8 percent to reach 0.9 million tonnes. The data points to a broader increase in both international and internal grain distribution channels.
In addition to current export figures, Kazakh authorities have announced plans to significantly expand the country’s grain processing infrastructure. New processing facilities are scheduled for development, with the stated objective of increasing the combined annual capacity to 5.8 million tonnes by 2028. This expansion is intended to support higher export volumes and improve domestic supply chain efficiency.
The surge in grain deliveries to Afghanistan aligns with ongoing regional trade dynamics, as neighboring countries continue to supply staple commodities to Afghan markets. Kazakhstan’s projected infrastructure upgrades suggest a long-term strategy to consolidate its role as a key agricultural exporter in the region.
