
One Child Killed, Three Injured in Unexploded Munitions Blast in Afghanistan's Khost
KHOST, Afghanistan (Afghan Verified) — One child was killed and three others injured in an explosion of unexploded munitions in Khost province, according to reports from Hasht-e Subh and Pajhwok Afghan News.
Pajhwok, citing local police, said the blast occurred Sunday in the Mardikhel area of Khost city from an old mortar shell. The three injured individuals were taken to a hospital. Police urged residents to avoid touching unexploded ordnance.
Hasht-e Subh reported the incident on Monday, the 17th of Hamal, as a mine explosion that killed one student and wounded three others, including one boy and two girls. The injured were transferred to a hospital in satisfactory condition.
The event follows World Mine Action Day. Hasht-e Subh cited UNAMA data placing Afghanistan third globally for munitions casualties, with about 50 deaths monthly, and International Committee of the Red Cross figures showing 467 casualties from 217 incidents in 2025.
