Over 36,000 Sheets of Karakul Skin Exported Through Hairatan Port This Year
Officials from the Karakul Export Development Institute in northern Afghanistan report that more than 36,000 sheets of karakul skin have been exported through Hairatan port in Balkh province this year.
The officials confirmed the export figure, highlighting the role of northern and northeastern provinces as key production centers for karakul skin in the country. These regions remain central to the industry's output.
Exports of karakul products continue to Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Russia. The trade sustains a traditional industry that provides income for many families. Karakul skins are utilized in the production of blankets and jackets, supporting livelihoods in the producing areas.
Hairatan port serves as a vital gateway for these exports, facilitating commerce from Balkh province to regional markets. The ongoing viability of the karakul sector underscores its economic importance amid Afghanistan's diverse agricultural and pastoral activities.
