Pakistan Ranked First in Global Terrorism Index 2026
Pakistan has been ranked first in the Global Terrorism Index 2026, becoming the country most affected by terrorism for the first time in the index's history.
The report, published on March 21, 2026, attributes Pakistan's top position to a significant increase in terrorist activities and insecurity. It records 1,139 deaths and 1,045 terrorist incidents in Pakistan in 2025, the highest fatalities from terrorism in the country since 2013.
The index links the rise to attacks that intensified following the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, along with Pakistan's tensions with neighboring countries and expanded violence by groups including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has critically worsened the security situation.
Relations between the Taliban and Pakistan have become severely fragile in recent months. Pakistan has stated that its airstrikes in Afghanistan targeted terrorist groups.
United Nations statistics show that these airstrikes injured a large number of civilians in Afghanistan and displaced thousands of others. The Taliban reported that one such strike on a drug addicts' treatment center in Kabul killed more than 400 people.
