PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Afghan Verified) -- A peace jirga in Peshawar hosted by Arbab Shahzad Khan, former senior secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has voiced support for diplomacy between the Taliban and Pakistan.
The gathering was organized by the Movement for Support of Sustainable Policies and Executive Reforms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the National Reform Movement. It brought together representatives from political parties, scholars, the business community and media.
Participants emphasized that the territories of Afghanistan and Pakistan should not be used against each other. They proposed establishing a continuous communication structure to facilitate ongoing dialogues between the Afghan Taliban and the Pakistani government.
The jirga called for an immediate ceasefire amid deadly clashes between Afghan Taliban fighters and the Pakistani army that have continued for about a month. Tensions had eased following a temporary ceasefire observed during Eid al-Fitr.
Organizers announced plans for another similar meeting in Quetta aimed at promoting peace and reducing tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan.
