Russia Calls Deployment of US, NATO Military Facilities in Afghanistan Unacceptable
MOSCOW (Afghan Verified) — Zamir Kabulov, Russia's special representative for Afghanistan, stated that the deployment of US or NATO military facilities in Afghanistan or neighboring countries is unacceptable under any pretext.
Kabulov expressed hope that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan government will continue to oppose such deployments.
His remarks responded to questions about potential US requests for access to the Bagram air base amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, including the Iran crisis. Kabulov described these overtures as nothing new.
He noted that the Donald Trump administration had repeatedly sought the return of control over Bagram following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.
Kabulov's comments, made in an interview with RIA Novosti, underscore Russia's firm stance against renewed Western military presence in the region. The Bagram base, once a key US hub, was handed over to Afghan forces before the withdrawal and has since remained under Islamic Emirate control.
Russia has maintained diplomatic engagement with the Islamic Emirate since its formation in August 2021, focusing on regional security and counterterrorism cooperation. Kabulov's statements align with Moscow's broader policy of preventing NATO expansion near its borders.
