The Taliban's Promotion of Virtue officers are currently investigating reports of physical and verbal abuse directed at a Shiite cleric, Ayatollah Sharifi, in Kabul, the Afghanistan Shiite Commission reported.

The incident is said to have taken place in District 18 of Kabul. According to the Afghanistan Shiite Commission, Ayatollah Sharifi was subjected to beatings and insults by officers after he performed a marriage contract prior to the wedding ceremony.

The Commission stated that in their engagement with the Taliban, they received promises of cooperation and a serious follow-up into the matter. This includes a commitment from the authorities to share the eventual results of their investigations regarding the treatment of the cleric.

Despite these assurances, the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue has not yet provided an official response to the reports of the abuse or the meeting conducted with the Shiite Commission.

The Afghanistan Shiite Commission further noted that this incident reflects a broader, recurring pattern of pressure and harassment that has been directed toward Shiite religious figures over the last five years.

Reliability assessment

The report provides concrete, checkable details including the name of the victim (Ayatollah Sharifi), the specific location (District 18, Kabul), and direct attribution to a named organization (Afghanistan Shiite Commission).

The source language mixes facts with framing or advocacy wording. Afghanistan International: "a claim that has repeatedly faced contradictions" - This phrase frames the Taliban's official position as a falsehood or hypocrisy rather than simply reporting the claim.
